Big Al Coleman

Richmond legend and long time sports radio host

Big Al stepped down as host of his radio show in February 2025 after 33 years on the Richmond-area airwaves.   Coleman began his radio career knowing very little about the sports journalism industry. He started at WRNL-910 in 1992 and moved to WXGI-950 in 2001 before finally landing at ESPN. The Petersburg native said he lived by advice from the late Chuck Noe: “Always be yourself. Either they’re going to like you or not. Don’t worry about it.” By many accounts, that indeed seemed to be the case. Big Al was known for rarely – if ever – holding back his opinions.  Currently Big Al hosts a Podcast titled Don’t Drop the Soap Sports.
